World Youth and Teenage Biology Knowledge Contest -Season 1 consists of three core modules. The first is Basic Biology Knowledge, which covers fundamental concepts and theorems in core disciplinary fields such as Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology and Physiology, including the Cell Theory, Mendel's Laws of Inheritance, the principle of ecosystem stability and the mechanism of human respiratory action. It also includes the basic principles and equipment of classic biological experiments like Mendel's Pea Hybridization Experiment, the Cell Plasmolysis Experiment and the Pneumococcal Transformation Experiment, as well as key figures and their representative contributions in the history of biological development, such as Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel, James Watson and Francis Crick. The second module is the Application of Biological Phenomena and Laws. It involves the analysis of the principles behind common biological phenomena in daily life, such as the causes of plant phototropism, the ecological significance of animal migration and the defense mechanism of the human immune system. It also covers the embodiment of biological laws in technological inventions, including gene editing technology and genetic principles, biopharmaceuticals and microbial metabolic mechanisms, and ecological agriculture and material cycling laws. Additionally, it includes the connections and comprehensive application among different biological branches, such as the coordination between gene expression and cellular metabolism, and the interaction between ecosystems and biological evolution. The third module is Biological Practice and Application. It includes the basic usage methods of common biological experimental tools, such as the operational standards for microscopes, centrifuges and petri dishes. It also involves the analysis of simulated biological problems, like exploring the environmental factors affecting seed germination and designing simple ecological bottles to maintain ecological balance. Besides, it covers the basic application of biological knowledge in daily life, such as formulating diets based on nutritional principles, using biological control technologies to manage agricultural pests and guiding healthy living through genetic knowledge.

The contest features diverse question types, with the difficulty adjusted according to the age and knowledge reserve of the participants. The Children's Group focuses on the mastery of basic biological knowledge and the identification of common biological phenomena in daily life, while the Youth Group emphasizes the comprehensive application of biological laws and the ability to solve practical biological problems.

The deadline for award applications is two weeks after the announcement of the results.

All awards will be mailed within eight weeks after the application deadline.

Awards and certificates will be sent via SF Express, cash on delivery.

Once the awards are signed for, no replacements will be issued in case of damage or loss.

The organizers are not responsible for failed deliveries due to incorrect information or communication difficulties.

Competition Guidelines:

 

1. Competition Categories
Participants may self-select their competition tier based on question difficulty groupings.

2. Registration & Timing

  • Complete registration and submit your exam before the stated deadline.

  • A confirmation email will be sent upon registration.

  • Access the competition portal at any time before the deadline to complete the exam.

3. Exam Format

  • Platform: Online, with multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, or short-answer questions.

  • Device: Computers are recommended; mobile devices are permitted but may limit functionality.

  • Integrity Rules:

    • Strictly adhere to the academic honesty pledge.

    • Switching screens, impersonation, or external assistance is prohibited.

4. Competition Rules

  • Duration: 30–45 minutes (varies by category). Answers auto-submit when time expires.

  • Attempts: One submission per participant.

  • Strategy: Prioritize familiar questions first. Unanswered items may be revisited until time ends.

  • Tools: Calculators are permitted.

5. Content & Expectations
Questions assess both foundational knowledge and advanced problem-solving skills.

6. Results & Rankings

  • School rankings will be calculated using participant-provided data.

  • To ensure fairness, answers and results will not be released immediately post-competition.

  • Final rankings will be:

    • Emailed/WhatsApp messaged to registered contacts.

    • Published on the official website and social media.

Entry Requirements:

1. Basic Biology Knowledge

This module focuses on core concepts, covering the basic frameworks of disciplinary branches such as Cell Biology, Genetics, and Ecology (e.g., cell structure and function, genetic material transmission, ecosystem composition), classic literature and methods (e.g., the academic value of "On the Origin of Species", controlled experiment methods, principles of biological data analysis), and unit characteristics (e.g., cell totipotency, gene expression regulation, niche principle). It systematically assesses the definition and observation of biological quantities, the classification and characterization of biological phenomena, the connection between laws and technologies (e.g., genetic laws and breeding technologies), and the application of terminology, helping participants understand the laws of biological phenomena and disciplinary diversity.

 

2. Biological Phenomena and Theoretical Principles

This module explores the causes, evolutionary mechanisms, and far-reaching impacts of biological phenomena, such as the transmission laws of genetic material during cell division, the operational mechanism of natural selection in biological evolution, the inherent logic of material cycling and energy flow in ecosystems, and the regulatory mechanism of human internal environment homeostasis. It analyzes the scope of application and adaptation principles of biological laws (e.g., the applicable scenarios of classical genetics and molecular genetics, the connection between individual physiology and population ecology), as well as core biological theories (e.g., the theoretical system of Cell Theory, the logical framework of Darwin's Evolution Theory, the core connotation of the Central Dogma). It conducts in-depth research on the interconnections among fields such as cell biology, genetics, ecology, and physiology in biology (e.g., gene mutations and abnormal cell functions, ecological imbalance and species extinction), the driving factors of biological environmental changes (e.g., technological innovation improving the precision of microscopic observation, extreme environments promoting biological adaptability), and the regular characteristics of biological phenomena (e.g., biological periodicity, population quantity change curves). It also explores the role of human activities in the application of biological laws (e.g., the impact of scientists' experimental design on theory verification, the practical transformation of breeding principles by agricultural technicians).

 

3. Biological Practice and Application

This module strengthens biological practical skills, including the use of common biological experimental tools (e.g., operational specifications for instruments such as microscopes, centrifuges, and incubators; methods for collecting and processing biological samples; drawing and analyzing biological charts) and the handling of basic biological tasks (e.g., making simple biological specimens; statistical analysis and error analysis of experimental data; observation and recording reports of biological phenomena). Through case analysis simulating real biological scenarios, it guides participants to interpret biological data and materials (e.g., experimental data tables, biological specimen observation records, ecological survey reports), evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of biological conditions in specific scenarios (e.g., the impact of temperature and humidity in the culture environment on microbial growth, the matching degree between soil fertility and crop yield in planting industry), and formulate reasonable solutions for specific biological situations (e.g., simulating the design of crop disease-resistant breeding programs, simulating the planning of urban green space ecosystem construction). It initially applies biological research methods to conduct simple biological analysis, such as comparing the advantages and disadvantages of different experimental schemes, estimating the scope of impact of biological phenomena, and contrasting similar biological phenomena under different conditions (e.g., differences in plant phototropism in different environments, analysis of the universality of genetic codes among different species).

 

4、Question Types and Difficulty Levels

The contest features diverse question types, including multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, short-answer questions, experimental analysis questions, and biological scheme design questions (e.g., experimental design for simulated biological scenarios, ecological protection scheme planning). The difficulty level is adjusted according to the age and knowledge reserve of participants: the Children's Group focuses on the memory and simple application of basic biological knowledge, while the Youth Group emphasizes the in-depth understanding of biological theories and the ability to solve complex biological problems.
