World Youth and Teenage Chinese and English Calligraphy Contest

The online examination of the World Youth and Teenage Chinese and English Calligraphy Contest consists of three main sections: basic calligraphy skills, such as stroke control, character structure for Chinese calligraphy and lettering for English calligraphy, and understanding of traditional calligraphy tools and materials; calligraphy aesthetics and cultural connotations, including the historical development of Chinese and English calligraphy styles, the artistic charm of classic calligraphy works, and the cultural significance behind different calligraphy forms; and practical creation and application, including the ability to create calligraphy works with different themes, the adaptation of calligraphy styles to various application scenarios (such as greeting cards, posters), and the integration of modern elements into traditional calligraphy. The examination tasks are of various types, and the level of difficulty is set according to age and skill level, with the children's group emphasizing basic strokes and neat writing, and the youth group placing more emphasis on artistic expression, creativity, and the demonstration of cultural understanding in calligraphy works.

Group Awards:

Award winners can request customized awards featuring the participant's name in Chinese or English.

 

Award Options:

  • Electronic Certificate: HKD 200

  • Electronic Certificate + Physical Certificate + Medal: HKD 325

  • Electronic Certificate + Physical Certificate + Medal + Trophy: HKD 365

The deadline for award applications is two weeks after the announcement of the results.

All awards will be mailed within eight weeks after the application deadline.

Awards and certificates will be sent via SF Express, cash on delivery.

Once the awards are signed for, no replacements will be issued in case of damage or loss.

The organizers are not responsible for failed deliveries due to incorrect information or communication difficulties.

Competition Guidelines:

1. Competition Categories

Participants can self-select their category based on age and script type:

 

  • Age Groups: Children (8–12 years), Youth (13–18 years).

  • Script Types: Chinese Calligraphy (traditional/simplified characters) or English Calligraphy (handwritten fonts like Copperplate, Gothic).

2. Registration & Timing

  • Deadline: Complete registration and submit entries before [specific date, e.g., "December 31, 2025"].

  • Confirmation: A registration confirmation email will be sent within 48 hours.

  • Submission Window: Access the contest portal anytime before the deadline to upload entries.

3. Submission Format

  • Platform: Online portal (supports JPG/PNG uploads).

  • Entry Requirements:

    • Chinese Calligraphy: Works must include idioms, ancient poetry, or modern prose (e.g., 《三字經》quotes).

    • English Calligraphy: Texts can be literary excerpts, quotes, or original compositions.

    • Size: Minimum A4 (210×297mm); ensure clear, high-resolution scans (300 DPI).

  • Device: Recommended to use a scanner; smartphone photos are acceptable if well-lit and straight-on.

4. Integrity Rules

  • Participants must certify that entries are original and handwritten.

  • Plagiarism, digital editing, or third-party assistance is strictly prohibited.

  • Switching accounts or impersonation will result in disqualification.

5. Competition Rules

  • Duration: Submissions must be uploaded before the deadline; no in-progress timing limits.

  • Attempts: One entry per participant (choose either Chinese or English calligraphy).

  • Tools: Brushes, ink, pens, or markers are permitted; no digital drawing tools.

6. Evaluation Criteria

  • Technical Proficiency: Stroke consistency, layout balance, and adherence to calligraphic traditions.

  • Artistic Creativity: Unique style, use of color (if applicable), and cultural interpretation.

  • Content Relevance: Appropriate text selection and meaningfulness of the content.

7. Results & Announcements

  • School Rankings: Calculated based on group performance (optional school affiliation submission).

  • Confidentiality: Entries and scores are not disclosed publicly during evaluation.

  • Final Results:

    • Sent via email/WhatsApp to registered contacts.

    • Published on the official website and social media, including winning works and honorable mentions.

    • Penmanship techniques (e.g., Copperplate, Gothic, Modern Cursive).

    • Letter structure, spacing, and historical fonts (e.g., Old English, Spencerian).

    • Understanding of calligraphic tools (e.g., dip pens, brush pens, ink types).

    • Traditional tools: Ink brushes (Chinese), dip pens (English).

    • Modern tools: Calligraphy markers or digital tablets (with manual, non-automated strokes).
