World Youth Children's Wind Music Competition

World Youth Children's Wind Music Competition.png

The online competition of the World Youth Children's Wind Music Competition consists of three main sections: Basic wind music skills, including pitch control, breath regulation, fundamental playing techniques (such as legato, staccato, and articulation), and knowledge of wind instrument types (such as the clear tone quality of the flute, the jazz-style adaptability of the saxophone, and the high-pitched range characteristics of the trumpet); Wind instrument culture and creative principles, including the historical origins of wind instrument forms (such as the development of classical brass instruments in court music and the evolution of modern woodwind instruments in jazz ensembles), cultural symbolism in folk wind instruments (such as the different melodies of the suona in traditional celebrations representing joy or sorrow), and the influence of social trends on wind instrument development (such as the rise of popular music driving the widespread use of the saxophone in pop music); Wind Music Practice and Application, including interpretation of wind music works (e.g., analyzing the emotions conveyed by the melodic fluctuations in classic wind music excerpts), improvisation (e.g., playing a melody that responds to a chord progression on the spot), and using wind music to express ideas in real-life scenarios (e.g., conveying a longing for peace through the melodious sound of a flute, or showcasing the vitality of a sports event through the passionate sound of a trumpet).
The competition features multiple wind instrument categories, with difficulty levels adjusted according to age and experience: the children's group focuses on foundational techniques (such as simple scale exercises and short melodic phrases); the youth group emphasizes creative expression (such as incorporating unique ornamental techniques into performances to form a personal style), thematic interpretation (such as exploring social issues like the relationship between humans and nature through variations in the dynamics of wind instrument melodies), and problem-solving through wind instrument composition (such as selecting a bright-toned flute and a lively rhythm pattern to convey a joyful mood).

Presentation style: Videos should adhere to the presentation characteristics of wind instrument performances (e.g., fully showcasing the performer's entire body and the wind instrument, avoiding obstructed views, and ensuring adequate lighting to prevent shadow interference).

Equipment and tools: Use a stable camera or smartphone to record performance videos, ensuring clear sound without background noise, stable visuals, and a complete presentation of the entire performance process (including the beginning and ending to ensure continuity).

  1. Jury Evaluation & Integrity Rules

Jury Panel: Composed of international wind instrumentalists, wind music producers, and wind music education experts.

Evaluation Criteria:

Technical Proficiency (50%): Accuracy of playing techniques, ability to control wind instruments (such as fingerings for flute, breath control for saxophone, lip vibration control for trumpet), precision of performance, and mastery of skills specific to styles (e.g., purity of tone in classical wind music, improvisational skills in jazz wind music, emotional expression in pop wind music).

Artistic Expressiveness (30%): Interpretation of the repertoire, emotional communication, stylistic creativity, and ability to tell stories through wind music elements (such as melodic changes, dynamics, and transitions between sections).

Auditory Appeal (20%): Uniqueness of the performance, integration of form and content, resonance with the audience, and effective use of musical space (e.g., phrase structure, tempo changes, and hierarchical arrangement).

  1. Artistic Expression & Cultural Context

Exploring Thematic Interpretation and Historical Depth:

Style Analysis: Origins and stylistic characteristics of wind music forms (e.g., the rigorous melodies of classical wind music, the improvisational rhythms of jazz wind music, the unique charm of ethnic wind music).

Work Interpretation: Telling emotional stories through wind music melodies (e.g., conveying tenderness in lyrical pieces, passion in inspirational works) and connecting to cultural/historical narratives (e.g., reflecting ethnic traditions, depicting modern life).
